Masterplan Audio Productions

Let’s assume that’s a given for any self-respecting audio professional, but this particular story is mine.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend the better part of my late teens and early twenties in rundown vans, driving up and down Europe playing hundreds of gigs in bands. From the dirtiest dive bars to the main stages of some of Europe's largest alternative festivals: I've seen them all.

While I was doing the whole rock ’n roll thing in the early ‘00s, I started an indie label called Thanks But No Thanks Records, mainly focused on melodic punk rock. The label gave me the chance to work closely with a lot of musicians, and so during the early TBNT days I started taking in bands to do preproduction with them at my home studio, where I had always demo’ed my own bands’ songs.  Working with other people’s music definitely ignited my love for recording.

My work with Thanks But No Thanks Records ultimately led me to a job at Universal Music Belgium, where I spent about 10 years as the label’s A&R manager.

Playing in the big leagues of our small country taught me what makes our industry tick. Universal was the perfect place to fuse my love for heartfelt songs in all shapes and forms with the practicalities of making great records.  As a bonus, I got to see some of the world’s best engineers, producers and mixers working up close.

Another thing being A&R thaught me was the reality of keeping budgets in check and the legal side of things: deadlines, contracts, marketing and promotion aren’t what you generally think of when listening to your favourite album, but as an A&R and a producer, you learn that these things can make the difference between a great song with close to no traction, and a mediocre song with a a lot of it – be it streams, airplay or other metrics of success. Suffice to say: I learned to look at the production process as a whole, and I use that experience in whichever way I can as a producer.
